NOTES/GUIDELINES

Express the measurement of file size in bytes. Do not use kilobytes, megabytes or gigabytes.

The exact conversion is as follows:
1 Byte = 8 bits
1 Kilobyte = 1024 Bytes
1 Megabyte = 1048576 Bytes
1 Gigabyte = 1073741824 Bytes

If your digitizing or media conversion technology automatically specifies file size, you are good to go. Many digital asset management systems and their associated media ingestion tools will automatically generate the structural metadata associated with a specific digital file, including its size in bytes.

If you need to manually convert a file size into bytes, we suggests using an online byte calculator, such as this web-based application: http://www.matisse.net/bitcalc/
